Reflection: The First Step

Deciding on our topic was no easy feat. Our initial list ranged from women in academia to at-risk youths before we finally settled upon buskers. Why them exactly? Well, we found buskers to be a group of people who felt both familiar yet foreign. Many of them are amongst us but many of us barely register their presence. We all know about the middle-aged “uncle” who belts out classics at underpasses, the wide-eyed, fresh faced youth croning to his guitar and the group of flexible gymnasts performing eye-popping stunts along Orchard Road. On the other hand, we’ve also heard stories of buskers as desperate bums and jobless people who don’t care much for life.
As much as their work places them in the spotlight, they remained largely invisible to the public. We seek out to ask some basic questions: Who are they and why do they do what they do?
Our topic also seemed to fit in perfectly with current sentiment. Buskers were popping up more frequently in public spaces, with places like Esplanade drawing in a consistent crowd. Meanwhile, the government has increased the number of busking spots areas. Has these changes made a huge impact on their work? Or does it mean stiffer competition and less revenue?
Our focus for the week is to conduct further research to better shape the course of our project. These information will be compiled and presented as "Resources” on this blog.
With this project, we hope to learn more about this group of elusive performers and their stories, to breakdown stereotypes and right the wrong and more importantly - to provide them with a larger voice on this platform.
